Central Jordan Field Trip: Late Campanian geological layer

05 November, 2024

From October 25th to November 5th, Dr. Amir Kalifi (Research Scientist) and Wesam Abu Leila (PhD Candidate) conducted field research in Central Jordan, specifically investigating the Late Campanian geological layer. This layer contains what is likely the world’s largest outcrop of an Oyster-mound complex. In addition to the Oyster-mounds, significant deposits of economically valuable phosphates have been found in this region, which are actively mined and are a key resource for Jordan. Wesam Abu Leila’s research focuses on understanding the spatio-temporal distribution of this complex sedimentary system. This involves detailed logging of sedimentary sections and collecting rock samples for further analysis and age dating.
